Storm iQ Tour 78U
With the PBAs new urethane rule that start the beginning of 2024, it was only a matter of time before Storm came out with something. Introducing the iQ Tour 78U, the ball features the iconic C3 core that has been in the iQ Tour for over 10 years and the new Controll 78 Urethane solid cover. This ball comes out of the box pretty dull with 500 grit finish to help with the added hardness and with the lower RG in the core I expected it to be way different than anything else SPI has created with urethane. I drilled mine like my favorite Fast Pitch, 5.5 x 1 and man I am super excited to have this ball in my bag. This ball is easy 4-5 boards of more overall hook than my Fast Pitch was so I believe I can use this on patterns with more volume and even a couple feet longer. It still gives me that typical urethane shape even with the hardness being higher. If you are in the market for an new urethane ball, look no farther than the iQ Tour 78U.

Storm IQ Tour 78/U – WWRD 12/15/2023
Cover: Control 78 Solid Urethane Core: C3 Centripetal Control Core RG: 2.49 RG. Diff.: 0.029 Finish: 500-Grit Abralon Fragrance: None Storm’s new IQ Tour 78/U Solid Urethane Piece. This piece is good for Low Volume Patterns. PAP is 5 5/16 R 1 3/16 Up. Rev Rate: 400. Speed: 16.5. Drilled this piece with the Pin Up between the Fingers and the CG kicked out 1” from the palm. Out of Box ball motion was smooth through the fronts with a smooth backend shape. I compared this to the Storm Pitch Black. The 78/U was a few boards right of the Pitch Black. The Pitch Black was a few boards left and started early in the mids with a urethane motion on the backend. This piece will be good for bowlers with high rev rate. !Q78U
Hey everyone, I'm back with another ball review, and this time it's for the Storm !Q Tour 78-U. In 14 pounds this ball is wrapped in the Controll 78 Solid Urethane Cover and has the C³ Centripetal Control and has an RG of 2.54, Diff of .034. The layout for this ball is 4x4x2 Urethane…..I am not sure that a piece of raw material has changed and divided a sport or industry as much as urethane has. No matter what side of the fence you are on it is here and doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon. I honestly can attest that this is not a ball that I will use a lot and that is not because it is bad, but the fact is that controlled urethane reaction is best suited for those with a much higher rev rate then mine. With proper urethane reaction it has an early hook and stays continuous but for me I saw it as early due to the 500 grit surface and the ball burned up/rolled out. Standing on 20 and trying to “hook” it just had the ball roll out and I could move all the way right and throw it directly at the pocket but the ball hit very light. For me and low rev guys that can not get that urethane reaction can rely on a weaker ball like a Storm Tropical Surge or a Roto Grip Hustle. My best suggestion as always is to find a Matchmaker Live to throw the new balls and talk with the Pro Shop and/or Pro that is there on what ball is best for you. Storm !Q Tour 78/U - Master Line Coverstock: Controll 78 Solid Urethane - 500 Grit Abralon Core: C3 Centripetal RG: 2.49 Differential: .029 (15 lbs) Layout: 5 x 5 x 2 PAP: 6" Right, 1 3/8" Up Axis Tilt: 16° Rotation: 51° Rev Rate: 450-500 Speed: 17-18 mph Location: Vista Lanes - Yorkville, NY Pattern: Kegel Broadway V2 Lane Surface: HPL The !Q Tour 78/U is the newest urethane option from Storm. The name says it all…78 hardness urethane cover that is PBA compliant with the proven C3 Centripetal core used in the !Q series. The design intent was to create a smooth and predictable ball motion while maintaining a true urethane reaction. The !Q Tour 78/U gave me a great look on Kegel Broadway V2 (37 feet and 26.45 mL) sliding on 17, looking 8 at the arrows with my breakpoint around 5-6. The harder cover creates a cleaner and more forward reaction when compared to the Pitch Black. The Pitch Black started up sooner and had a more continuous motion in the same spot on the lane. The !Q Tour 78/U and Pitch Black will compliment each other nicely in my bag and be a great bridge to reactive balls on shorter patterns. Stop by your local Storm VIP pro shop to check it out! Storm !Q Tour 78/U review by Lonnie Pemberton
BALL: Core: F-8 Cover: TX-16 Pearl Reactive Finish: Reacta Gloss RG: 2.52 (15lbs) Differential: 0.053 (15 lbs) ME: Right-Handed Tweener Speed: 12-13 mph Rev Rate: 315 Axis Tilt: 14° Axis Rotation: 74° PAP: 5 1/8 R 7/8 Up Ball Layout: Pin over ring 4 3/4 Pin to Pap 1 7/8 Pin Buffer The newest signature release in collaboration with Jason Belmonte is called the Journey. It features a pearlized version of the TX-16 cover featured on the Phaze II wrapped around the F-8 core that was used in the Fate. This combination creates the most hook on a Belmo ball to date. I tested the Journey on the house shot in my home center. The Journey surprised me a bit with how well it blended out the wet/dry. I didn't expect the pearl version of the TX-16 cover to retain so many of the characteristics that I loved about the Phaze II. The Journey sees the mid-lane without over-reading the dry but still has a very continuous roll off the back-end. It definitely creates more shape down-lane than the Phaze II but it's not a jerky motion where the ball wants to stand up all at once and get forward. I was also very happy with how long I could stay in the Journey as the lanes transitioned. It responds very well to hand position changes, allowing you to manipulate motion of the ball down-lane. This lets you square the ball up and play closer to the friction on the fresh and when the lanes really start to hook, you can easily move in, get your hand around the ball and see it come off the friction down-lane and still get great pin action. The Journey is one of the most versatile balls I've seen. As a Pro Shop Operator I love a ball that allows me to tailor reaction to the needs of my customer and this ball covers a wider variance of bowling styles than anything on the market. IQ Tour 78/U Review
Layout: 4.5 x 45 #1 4 x 0 #2 Surface: 500 Grit Abralon The IQ Tour 78/U brings the Centripetal C3 core found in the entire IQ lineup paired with the new Control 78 Urethane Coverstock. The new 78 hardness of this IQ 78/U was to conform to the new PBA hardness rule. As a PBA member and one who avidly does the regional Tour, it was essential for me to have this ball. Since urethane seems to be so prevalent, I drilled two that will give me two different shapes on the lane. The 4.5" by 45 drilling matches what I have on a current Pitch Black and Zen U. This drilling gives me a slightly cleaner motion on the lane while giving me more overall backend motion then a stronger drilling. I use this drilling specifically on sport patterns where the volume is higher and the lane surface is older or warn. The second drilling I used a 4 x 0. This drilling is super strong flaring and puts the pin directly on my axis line. This causes really strong hook in the front part of the lane and a more controlled backend. I can use this one being more left to right or if the lane pattern is high volume with a harder lane surface environment. Comparing the two together on my Typical House pattern which is 44ft and medium volume, the 4.5 x 45 ball allowed me to play the lanes more in front of me keeping my angles closed in the track area. More ideal for the fresh to control the backend and blend the lanes better. The 4 x 0 ball gave me about 5 more boards of overall total hook. It forced me to be further left than the first one because of the strong hook in the front of the lane. I could use this one either on the fresh or for transition if urethane is really necessary. Comparing the 4.5 x 45 IQ 78/U to the Pitch Black, I was able to stand in the same spot but the IQ 78/U was more controlled in the backend. When I missed outside of my target, the ball struggled to make its way back to the pocket correctly. The Pitch Black was able to carry the pins better due to its weaker core and coverstock combination. If I didn't do the PBA events, I would strictly stick to the Pitch Black for my personal game. Comparing to the Zen U, the Zen U hooked 2 more boards overall and gave me a slightly stronger backend comparable to the Pitch Black. For Non-PBA events where urethane is necessary, I would stick to the Zen U and Pitch Black. However, the 4 x 0 IQ 78/U gave me a very unique motion that was also quite strong and accented the ball well. Due to the IQ 78/U extra hardness, the ball shines up faster so keeping up with the cover surface would be more critical for success. Adam Chase Storm Staff

IQ Tour 78-U
Storm IQ Tour 78-U Cover: 78 Control Urethane Solid Weight Block: C3 Symmetric Color: Crimson Review: With the recent PBA changes to the hardness of bowling balls going into effect Storm wanted to ensure that tour players had access to a urethane style ball that met those requirements. Introducing the IQ Tour 78-U. Which is a smooth and predictable bowling ball that all serious tournament bowlers should be carrying in their bag. When the lanes get a little squirrely and I feel lost on the pattern I tend to go back to the basics of playing straight up the boards. This ball is great for that. The color of this ball looks great both going down the lane and sitting on the shelf under the display lights. If you are looking to take your game to the next level, or see yourself bowling more tournaments in the near future I would highly recommend picking up one of these balls today! !Q 78/U
The all new !Q 78/U is Storm’s newest urethane ball in response to USBC Hardness rule being put in place. This ball is everything that I would have expected out of it, it is strong, slow, and reads the front of the lanes well. I am pleasantly surprised with what I have seen so far, with the harder cover I was worried that it would never hook. However, the R&D at storm did a good job putting a stronger core in this ball to combat this issue. From what I have seen so far, I would suggest drilling this ball with a weaker VAL angle (25-35 degrees) than a “traditional urethane” layout (0-10 degrees) to help the ball continue more downlane. I have seen a few other staffers drill the 78/U with a 10 degree VAL and it looked good, however, it looked like they were forced to have extremely tight angles in order to get optimum carry. With a weaker VAL, I am able to see more downlane shape so I can keep the ball in front of me and I can aslo move in and open up my angles a bit without sacrificing pin carry. All in all, I think that storm did a great job in such a short amount of time to combat the new PBA hardness rule changes. Go out and get yours December 15th at your local SPI proshop! Storm iQ Tour 78U
Storm iQ Tour 78U Layout: 4.5 x 5 x 2 Storm Pin Buffer Layout Rev Rate: 325 rpm, 7 degree of axis tilt, 40 degree of axis rotation Testing information: 41 foot THS (medium to light volume) Bowling Center: Fulton Bowling Center Kegel Machine – Brunswick Anvilane The Storm iQ Tour 78U utilizes the Controll 78 urethane coverstock and the C3 weight block. With the rules changing on the PBA Tour, the iQ Tour 78U is Storm’s answer. A very good answer as well. My pitch Black is still a little earlier but the stronger core in the iQ Tour 78U helps make up for the cover not being as aggressive. The ball motion is very similar. The good part is you don’t have to worry about changing unless you bowl on the PBA Tour. Visit your local Storm VIP Pro Shop! #Stormnation #SquadRG
